From an environmental perspective, multistrata coffee (and shaded coffee) lead are to be preferred over coffee monoculture, as they protect biodiversity as well as protecting soil on sloping land through the litter layer and the root systems. A recent study on international coffee market draws the conclusion that the market is willing to offer premium price to coffee beans that are produced in environmentally friendly systems. Using the Policy Analysis Matrix methodology this paper aims to understand :(i) how best multistrata coffee can provide incentives to smallholder coffee producers, (ii) what are the returns to land of this kind of land use system, and (iii) are there any strategic advantages embedded in the system that can be used by policy makers in dealing with the coffee cultivation within conflict sensitive areas such as state forestland, as it has been occurring in Sumberjaya. The study concludes that at proces that reflect long term means, multistrata system are financially and economically viable and also generate sustainable employment opportunity in rural area with better returns to labor than coffee monocultures. The strategic adventage of multistrata coffee system is that these land use systems can be offered as an alternative land use practices in land conflict resolution that is rooted in misperception of the state forest land utilization.
