Farmers planting trees during the Fruit Tree Portfolio Establishment Machakos County

World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) researchers have started to promote a new tool that will see farming households growing carefully selected fruit tree portfolios on their farms, in order to gain year-round supply of nutritious fruits to eat, for diverse diets and improved health. The fruit tree portfolio approach is designed to tackle the problem of micronutrient deficiencies, also known as ‘hidden hunger’. Funded by the European Commission (EC) and IFAD and implemented by the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) in Kenya and Mali, the Fruiting Africa project is addressing the challenge of low fruit consumption levels by improving productivity of fruit trees, introducing new nutrient-rich species and varieties, enhancing fruit processing, linking farmer to markets and increasing knowledge of mothers on the health benefits of daily fruit and vegetable consumption for the whole family See more: www.worldagroforestry.org/research/tree_diversity_domesti...
