The guidelines detailed in this document provide a common, general approach to site characterization and formulation of research agenda for the Alternatives to Slash-and-Burn programme (ASB). Several points must be stressed concerning this approach. First of all, the slash-and-burn topic is complex. Therefore, the focus of the characterization work must be issues unique to slash and burn. That focus is provided in the general objectives outlined in the initial slash-and-burn document produced at the Rondonia, Brazil, meeting in February 1992. The programme is by necessity interdisciplinary, and interactions among the various disciplines must be assured at each step. In addition, there are different scales of analysis: it is important to know what information is essential to characterize each level and how that information will be used and integrated into the overall programme.
