Methods for participatory on-farm agroforestry research

Agroforesters trying to use existing data from on-farm research have often been stymied by variable and poorly documented methods. There is clearly a need to identify and evaluate methods used in on-farm agroforestry research and to guide researchers towards successful approaches and techniques. To address this need, ICRAF organized a series of reviews culminating in an international workshop held in Nairobi from 19 to 23 February 1990. The objective was to examine recent experience in on-farm agroforestry research. The workshop agenda included plenary sessions for presentation and discussion of technical papers plus six concurrent sessions for small working groups. Summaries of the working group discussions were presented and discussed in a final plenary session. This document summarizes the presentations and discussions that took place at the workshop and mentions some of the key methodological issues, problems and potential solutions that were identified by the participants. Revised versions of 11 papers are being published in a special issue of the international journal Agroforestry Systems, along with abstracts of the other2l papers that were presented. During 1990, two articles drawing heavily from this workshop were published ¡n ICRAFs quarterly magazine, Agroforestry Today.
