This document discusses cocoa agroforestry systems as a credible alternative model for smallholder cocoa farmers facing an uncertain future. Cocoa agroforestry can produce high cocoa yields on a long-term basis without fertilizers by integrating cocoa with other plant species. It also improves soil fertility over time and provides farmers with multiple products and functions beyond just cocoa, including wood, medicine, and shade. Cocoa agroforestry systems demonstrate great resilience and flexibility in management over time compared to intensive cocoa monoculture models.
